A typical day in Nonsuch Abbeyfield

It is difficult to describe a typical day because each of our residents has his or her own personality, interests, preferences and community ties.

Because our residents prepare their own breakfast in their room, they have the freedom to get up at whatever time they wish. Some mornings may be taken up with an activity such as armchair exercises or a coffee morning for friends and neighbours. Residents are free to attend such activities or not, depending on their personal choice. Some may choose to go out shopping in the morning, or visit friends or family. Local buses run regularly to many different destinations.

“The highlight of my day is awaking in the morning and feeling secure, surrounded by my own possessions and many items of pure nostalgia. After making myself breakfast, I watch the tiny children pass my window on their way to school. Then I plan my day, knowing the housekeeper will prepare a wonderful lunch.” (resident)

Lunch is the main meal of the day and is served in the dining-room at about 12.45pm . Residents eat lunch and tea or supper together, unless they are out. Most residents spend a quiet afternoon in their rooms, but again there is complete freedom to do whatever you want. There may be more activity organised in the evenings after supper, such as film showings, theatre outings or Scrabble evenings.

We hold regular ‘consultation' meetings with residents when we check their views and invite them to make suggestions about the activities provided, meals, house decoration and furnishings and other services.
